A dysthymic disorder is milder than a major depression but lasts much longer ("All About," 2005). Bipolar disorder, unlike ordinary depression, is when a person swings between periods of
highs and lows ("All About," 2005). A cyclothymic disorder is a type of bipolar disorder and is when an individuals mood alternates with a less severe form of mania--called
hypmania--and a less severe depression ("All About," 2005). Obviously, that type would be more difficult to diagnose because the highs and lows are not as obvious. Clearly, in general, depression
is something that causes people to become unhappy. They live their lives with less than joyful experiences. It is as if a cloud hangs over them and does not want
to go away. Whatever causes depression, the important thing is to seek treatment as soon as possible. This is because severe depression can lead to suicide. It is also
important to seek help because no one should have to be in pain unnecessarily. There is treatment for the disorder. It seems that psychotherapy as well as antidepressant medication can
be effective in treatment ("Depression; Psychotherapy," 2004). Some patients are provided a combination of both. Psychotherapy is viewed as important and some professionals have criticized medical doctors for handing out
prescriptions for antidepressants without proper diagnoses and without considering talk therapy. Obviously, medication has its limitations. One type of treatment for depression is called attribution therapy. It is explained
