was governed (Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, 2011). The next year, the same type of law was passed for public high schools. Establishing school districts, taxation for government schools,
structure, curriculum, and attendance were determined between 1865 and 1900 (Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, 2011). All states established compulsory attendance laws between 1852 and 1913. Over the next several
decades education would be reformed, taxes would be levied, laws would be revised and the U.S. Supreme Court would become involved. Brown v. Board of Education, for instance, in 1954
changed education by outlawing segregation (Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, 2011). In 1965, the Congress passed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act which changed education again by providing funds
for resources for students who had learning problems (Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, 2011). These paragraphs barely scratch the surface of the history of education in the U.S. It
is a complex topic with many twists and turns. The system has been criticized since the beginning and yet it has contributed a great deal to the country. Public
