It is the decisions of men that determine where they will go in society and how they will be seen. For example, in one part of the poem Cid is
offered some women as wives, he declines but gives them to supposedly noble men. These men, in the end, turn on their wives and claim them to be whores, beating
them and leaving them to the wild animals. However, the women are found and returned to Cid who, as a man of honor and integrity and surely chivalrous, reclaims their
rightful heritage. Despite this pleasant ending to their predicament, they are seen merely as creatures that should be controlled by the laws of man. Ywain The Knight of
the Lion In this story which is primarily about Ywain as a brave and noble man, we have the woman Laudine whom Ywain loves. She is a woman who uses
love selfishly to some extent, because that is the only power she possesses as a woman. She inquires if the man that proposes to marry her is well established, noble,
with a title, and many other things ensuring that she will be taken care of for that is all a woman can expect or hope for. When she finds that
the man is Ywain she is happy and tells him, "she ought not refuse to take as lord a good knight and the son of a king" which is surely
a reflection of how a woman of any good sense could not possibly think of dismissing a man who had position and wealth. Again, this is because that is all
