old, one seems to be less and less respected. While that is the case, the boomer population is aging, and the elderly now live longer than ever before. There is in fact talk of raising the age of retirement to determine when social security can be collected. On one hand there is a recognition that people are staying young longer but on the other, there is a sense that society no longer wants them. Boomers lose jobs to the up and coming Generation Y and one can now join AARP at the age of 50. Certainly, ageism exists in the business world (Capowski, 1994). While fifty is perhaps the new thirty, in some way, fifty is also old. Some people do feel younger and are in good shape, while others are just discarded when they reach that half century mark. The culture in a sense is schizophrenic in how it views the elderly and the aging adult. To an extent, the dichotomy is detrimental to the elderly, but on the other hand, it is a recognition of the fact that the elderly are now productive into their later years. Retirement at age 65 is not right for everyone. Although there are individuals who gain a great deal of wealth and retire early, for a lot of people, work provides meaning. Aside from work and economic issues, aging affects relationships and when all is discussed in depth, it appears that aging is something that is viewed quite differently in different cultures. Attitudes vary regarding aging and the aging process (Silverstein, Angelelli & Parrott, 2001).
