Attitudes could be defined as the way
in which individuals have a tendency to react in a particular way to a particular idea or situation, which can be either positive or negative. Attitudes are based primarily upon
experiences and can be seen as having a close inter-relationship with opinions, beliefs and preconceptions. The study of attitude, and of attitude change, is relevant to both social and cognitive
psychology, since the way in which individuals develop and maintain particular attitudes can often be closely linked with forms of interaction with others. Although it is possible that changes in
subjective experience will result in attitude change, there are also a number of ways in which attitudes can be deliberately changed by external manipulation of opinions.
The learning process is generally
seen to be concerned with establishing or changing attitudes, and this can be accomplished in a number of different ways. Direct experience, incentive and coercive persuasion are all factors in
the way that attitudes can be altered, and as a result of these alterations the individual increases knowledge and the way in which they see themselves as reacting to acquired
knowledge.
