Furthermore, we must understand how teachers should respond to these students in order to facilitate the best educational opportunities for all involved. There are a variety of typical ADHD behaviors, including inability to maintain focus, diminished persistence, impulsivity, more active and restless than most children, difficulty following rules and regulations, etc. (Hartman, n.d.). More specifically, ADHD is a neurological disorder that is caused by a deficiency of norepinephrine and/or dopa, and dopamine in a specific set of brain circuits (Silver, 2002). It is which area of the brain circuits being affected that determines whether the individual will be hyperactive, distractive or impulsive (Silver, 2002). There are no formal tests to diagnose ADHD, but it is a disorder that is present at birth in those afflicted (Silver, 2002). Learning disabilities will often accompany ADHD, explained by "faulty wiring" in the brain cortex (Silver, 2002). This can result in problems with language, motor skills, cognitive function, reading, math, organization, etc. (Silver, 2002). In the classroom setting, it is evident that many of these characteristics could pose significant educational challenges (Hartman, n.d.). Interestingly, many of these traits are belong to gifted children as well, making it even harder to determine to which category the child belongs (Hartman, n.d.).
