someone diagnosed with this problem, a problem that seems to have not even existed 50 years ago. More and more children are being put on medication because they are diagnosed
with the problem and in essence it makes us wonder if the studies and diagnoses are valid. The following paper examines attention deficit disorders, the history, and treatment.
Attention Deficit Disorders Throughout history it seems that there has always been some sort of attention problems or another in people. One author indicates the following in terms of labels:
"ADHD has gone under a number of aliases since its first clinical description a century ago. In 1902 the set of characteristics was labeled as Morbid Defect of Moral Control
(Oh my!), followed by Post-encephalitic Behavior Disorders in 1922 (whatever that means). Minimal Brain Dysfunction was the new ADHD catchphrase in 1960, followed by Hyperkinetic Reaction in 1968. It was
not until 1980 that the term Attention Deficit Disorder +/- Hyperactivity was coined" (The History of ADHD and Attention Deficit Disorder, 2005). There are many different types of attention
deficit disorders, however generally all can be considered aspects of ADHD, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. What differs is perhaps the extent to which a person experiences difficulties in different areas. For
example, an individual with ADHD may not necessarily suffer from hyperactivity and thus they are generally deemed to have simply ADD. And, then there are adults who have the problem
and they are generally referred to as having Adult ADHD. One author notes that "The medical establishment currently recognizes three subtypes of ADHD: primarily inattentive, primarily hyperactive/impulsive, the combined subtype"
