The following examination, first of all, summarizes Rogers theory of personality development and therapeutic approach and then discusses how it relates and connects to the attachment theory of James Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth. In Carl Rogers theory of personality, the principal constructs are the organism and the self (Pescitelli). Another significant concept of Rogerian philosophy is the "phenomenal field" (Pescitelli). The "organism" is the totality of the individual, while the phenomenal field is all that the person has experienced (Pescitelli). Rogers posited that the "self," in an infant, is part of the phenomenal field, but slowly becomes differentiated from it as the infant forms a sense of self as independent. In other words, the infant does not distinguish between his or her own parts and effects from those of the environment. Anyone who has ever observed a babys total surprise and astonishment at observing his or her own hands knows this to be true. As cognitive power matures, the baby learns to make distinctions between his or her own body and the environment, which is how the conceptualization of self takes place. Both positive and negative values become attached to concepts as the child gets older. Rogers originated the concept of client-centered therapy, which is characterized by three primary factors. First of all Rogers felt that the therapist must accept the client as a person of "inherent worth, possessing both positive and negative feelings and impulses," which Rogers referred to as offering the client "unconditional positive regard" (Kirschenbaum 116). Second, Rogers stress the need for empathy and third, he felt that the therapist needed to genuine and real within the therapist/client relationship (Kirschenbaum 116).
