in Italy. Two such painters are Antonio Canale and Joseph William Mallord Turner. The two men painted approximately one hundred years apart and as such were clearly painters who represented
what they saw in different ways. In the following paper we examine Antonio Canales Santa Maria della Salute Seen from the Grand Canal (1730) and Joseph William Mallord Turners The
Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute, Venice (1843). Classical Style When we imagine paintings from more than a century ago we often think classical in terms of style.
But, one must not forget that styles in painting and art were constantly changing. This is quite obvious when looking at the two paintings under examination. With the earlier painting
from Canale we are provided with a far more classical painting than that which is seen in Turners work. What stands out as the most significant element that makes
Canales work more classic is its definition and realism. It is a very crisp painting that details many aspects of the surrounding region and the architecture within. It is a
very powerful painting in terms of perspective, and leaves nothing to the imagination as colors are vibrant, detailed lines very evident and the obvious play of light that is seen
through brightness and shadows. With Turners painting we see a much more subtle and allusive. His forms are not concrete nor are they clear and crisp. The colors blend
into one another presenting us with an almost abstract, or impressionistic portrayal of the landscape and the architecture. Forms flow and dissolve and we are thus clearly not left with
a classical style of painting but a painting that insists we use our imagination. The colors used by both artists are actually quite similar, though Turners colors are far
