industry in America and athletics is something that often begins in early childhood. Yet, there is a growing problem. Today, many athletes use steroids and the health risks are significant.
First, steroid use hurts the heart (Lardas, 2006). It raises blood pressure and increases cholesterol (Arenofsky, 2003). Many would argue that so does McDonalds but it seems as if the
risk from steroid abuse is much more severe. Lardas (2006) gives an example: " Start using steroids in high school, and before you graduate from college your plumbing might be
as clogged as that of a middle-aged man. A stroke or a heart attack could make you the talk of your dorm" (p.6). It would seem that heart damage is
enough to ban the substance-and it is banned in most every sport-but there are other risks as well. Steroids will also weaken the immune system (Lardas, 2006). Athletic teams that
play sports through the flu season are more likely to become ill, and that is not good for the sport. Clearly, even minor illness will impeded performance. Of course, that

that this could be a significant factor. Not only that, but mood swings are quite common with steroid abuse and it may even cause depression (Lardas, 2006). Further, it
could prompt violent activity (Lardas, 2006). In fact, schools which randomly test athletes find cause to test those who have gone into a rage. This is the hallmark of steroids.
Knowing all this, why would anyone support the use of steroids? There is another side. Just as the risks of recreational drug use have been exaggerated by the government, some
