well known question "What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? What have heretics to do with Christians?2" Tertullian created a metaphorical contrast between Athens and Jerusalem3. Athens is the
home of Greek philosophy, or pagan religion, where Jerusalem was the central locale for Christianity4. Tertullian had been convinced that the Christian faith as well as human wisdom were at
polar opposites5. Again, Tertullian converted to Christianity so he could only see one way of thinking. It was then his conviction that God revealed salvation solely in Scripture so mixing
the bible with pagan philosophy would distort Gods message6. This is not very different from the thinking of today. In a writing from
Clement of Alexandria, it is explained that the Greeks should not be condemned by those who have only glanced at their writings, because an understanding of the writings requires a
comprehensive investigation7. The document goes on to discuss philosophy, remarking that it does not take one away from faith, nor is it the originator of false practices; rather, philosophy depicts
the truth8. It may be viewed as a gift to the Greeks, and it helps the Greeks to attain a sense of righteousness9. The document suggests that there is the
notion that Greek philosophy is in opposition to Christianity. Many call Greek doctrines heresies as they see the Greek philosophy as a kind of false teaching10.
