stand as a foundation for all future endeavors. In the following paper we provide brief descriptions of the four types of government rule--monarchy, aristocracy, democracy and oligarchy--and then compare the
Athenian form of democracy to the American form of democracy. Monarchy "Monarchy Rule by one individual who attains position because of hereditary lines" (Roomes, 2001; Government%20Types.htm). In essence,
one individual, because of their power, position and ancestry, were allowed the power to control. In Athens, however, there was also a type of monarchy that involved individuals who were
essentially bosses. As one author states, "In many cities persons of exceptional energy, taking advantage of some social conflict or class grievance, secured a more or less irregular power in
the state. This combination of personality and opportunity has occurred in the United States of America, for example, where men exercising various kinds of informal power are called bosses" (Anonymous
Monarchy, Aristocracy and Democracy in Greece, 2002; S21_3.htm). In Greece, however, they were called tyrants and they were recognized as monarchs (Anonymous Monarchy, Aristocracy and Democracy in Greece, 2002). He
also claimed the authority of a monarch (Anonymous Monarchy, Aristocracy and Democracy in Greece, 2002). "Tyrants were distinguished from kings, who claimed some sort of right, some family priority, for
