the only higher individual, god or goddess, who seems to care for what happens to Odysseus and the only one who truly helps him to get through his trials and
tribulations. She has been with him throughout his time in Troy and is ultimately the one who makes it possible for the story to end well for Odysseus. In so
doing she also helps his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope. The following paper examines how and why Athena helps Penelope in this classic story. Athena and Penelope
As one would clearly imagine and assume, Athena is not ultimately interested or involved with the character of Penelope except where it involves the human being she admires and loves;
Odysseus. If Penelope were any other woman she would not help her. But, because Athena cares so much for Odysseus and feels that the odds are clearly stacked against him,
she will involve herself with Penelope in order that everything be made right for Odysseus. According to one critic, "The bond between them arises from the similarities of their
natures; as the Goddess herself puts it in Book 13: We both know tricks, since you are by far the best among all men in counsel and tales, but I
among all the Gods have renown for wit (metis) and tricks" (The Museum of the Goddess Athena). As one can see, Athena does not love Odysseus as a woman loves
a man, as a lover or potential lover. She loves him because she feels that they are essentially two individuals who possess the same sort of nature and personality. In
