of atheist thinkers such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. Hart argues that a combination of modernism and superficial scholarship has created
a mythology equivalent to that of a religious mythos, with the Enlightenment taking the role of a creation story, and individuals such as Galileo representing martyrs. In the course of
constructing this myth, a dichotomy has been established between religion, which is presented as evil, and science, which is presented as good. (It is notable that he distinguishes between religion
in general and Christianity, acknowledging that the former can be "violent, superstitious, amoral degrading and false" (8) whereas the latter is allegedly exempt from such characteristics.)
Part of the problem, he asserts, has been caused by the prevalence of "bad popular historians . . and the historical hearsay they promote" (35)
which has given the ordinary individual a false, distorted view of the past. He makes the reasonable point that few people have the "time or the need to sift through
academic journals and monographs . . trying to separate the gold from the dross" (35); consequently, we tend to accept the "simple picture" which comprises the "story that Western society
has been telling about itself for centuries now" (35). This "story" is one which rejects the positive elements of religion, especially Christianity, and which implies that if western Christianity had
never existed, our moral values would be just as strong, if not stronger. Hart asserts that in fact, it is religion which forms the foundation of social and individual morality:
it is, however, so much an integral part of western history that we are unable to appreciate its influence: we cannot see the forest for the trees, in effect.
