The question of whether extraterrestrial life exists or has existed has plagued us for centuries. Even our most primitive explorations of space were spurred on in
part by that question. Modern science, in turn, has made many positive strides towards finally answering that question. The goal, of course, is not just to find life
but to "determine and understand the distribution of life in the universe through time (Bada, 2005). Certain components of space we can experience using only our unaided senses.
These components are, however, extremely limited in regard to the percentage of space which they actually represent. Space, in fact, is incomprehensible in its extent. We measure the
distances in light years, not miles. We make hypotheses about it nature using observations of physical phenomena such as Einsteins theory of relativity, the Doppler effect and the nature
of light. Even with the most advanced features of technology and knowledge, however, we can only guess how extensive and how old the universe is and how it came
to be. What we do know that we are just tiny inconsequential specks in that great expanse of distance and time. We yearn, however, to more fully understand
space and with that yearning comes our desire to travel into space and to see first hand the marvels which it holds.
In order to seriously consider the question of extraterrestrial life we must first overcome our stereotypical images of little green visitors from Mars. As Longstaff (2005) observes, we
will not even be able to find artifacts left behind by intelligent life forms. Instead, we will find more subtle evidence of lower life forms, evidence like:
