is also an insidious disease. The individual with asthma can become so accustomed to the feelings of breathlessness and the wheezing that the condition can worsen without the sufferer even
being fully aware. Asthma sufferers tend to think of it as something that will pass momentarily as soon as they use the inhaler again?something they can control?like a headache.
However, asthma does have the potential to completely close off the bronchial tree in the lungs if the inflammation becomes severe. This is why there are more then 5000 deaths
each year in the US from this "controllable" malady (Depiro 154). Asthma is the third leading cause of preventable hospitalizations in the US and it affects over 14 million
Americans (Depiro 154). Each year there are approximately 470,000 hospitalizations due to asthma and the morality rate is rising (Depiro 154). However, the medical understanding of asthma and the ability
to treat this condition has never been better and is constantly improving. As implied above, a factor that contributes to this rise in asthma mortality includes the patients overuse
of inhalers?which results in a delay in seeking medical care (Depiro 154). Additional factors include a lack of ability or under-use of emergency medical care; low socioeconomic status; and
noncompliance with the a doctors specific treatment (Depiro 154). Also, some patients have a "blunted perception of dyspnea and poor sensitivity to oxygen levels" (Depiro 154). What this last
statement means is that as the asthma worsens and the lungs close off due to inflammation, the individual begins to have lowered oxygen levels. Rather then feeling panicky from this,
they merely feel "fuzzy-headed" as they arent particularly cognizant that they simply arent receiving enough oxygen. If the asthma worsens slowly, the patient will become progressively "oxygen-starved" without even noticing.
