Asthma is one of the more common health complications confronting the world population. Asthma is one of several restrictive airway diseases (RAD) which can be complicated by a
number of factors. Some of these factors are biological but others are occupational. One of the more interesting approaches to treating asthma is Yoga! Whether or not
Yoga has a real benefit for asthma, however, is a question that science has not yet been able to answer. Yoga is one
of the oldest physical exercise regimes known to mankind (Barker, 2005). It couples meditation with controlled breathing and stretches to yield a physically and mentally relaxing effect. Although
typically a personal experience, is embraced by ancient religions such as Buddhism and by individuals representing all generations and cultures. The practice allows the muting of everyday experiences such
as poverty, emotional and physical pain, and unhappiness in favor of obtaining a inner peace based on the knowledge of the superiority of the spiritual world.
It must be acknowledged that practices such as Yoga have an advantage in some ways over typical medical interventions in treating illness. Yoga can
be can be performed in absence of health care professionals, complex equipment, or even medicines. Some five-thousand years old the discipline has been believed by many to hold the
secret to better health and quality of life for centuries (Barker, 2005). Whether Yoga can definitively improve a condition like asthma, however, is doubtful to say the least.
Although some studies have been conducted that assert that this is the case, they are typically quite small and poorly designed (Zeidner, 2005).
