Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) is such an organization. ABC was initially founded in 1950 when seven contractors got together to create an association that held the basic philosophy
that the proper way to award contracts should be based on merit, or the most qualified rather than being based on the lowest bidder (ABC, Home, 2009). Today, ABC is
comprised of 79 chapters across the country and represents "25,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms" (ABC, 2009) with an aggregate two million employees (ABC, Home, 2009). Like all
professional groups, this one acts as the voice for its members (and even non-members in the field) in legislative actions (ABC, About, 2009). Actually, ABC reports that it works with
all three branches of the government and with the different sections of local governments (ABC, About, 2009). It is also the voice for its members in the news media (ABC,
Home, 2009). The mission of this organization is written as: the advancement of the merit shop construction philosophy, which encourages open competition and a free-enterprise approach that awards
contracts based solely on merit, regardless of labor affiliation (ABC, About, 2009). Its main objective is to provide services to its members and to provide information, support and whatever else
