Special education students require certain considerations if they are to advance to the best of their capabilities. An extremely important
factor in preparing these students to take productive roles in society is the integration of assistive technology into the classroom. This integration is critical not only from the perspective
that it allows a student to reach their full academic potential but also in the fact that it serves to acquaint students with the existence and value of such technology
so that they can seek to make it a part of their non-academic lives as well. Assistive technology is a relatively
new consideration in the educational environment. Indeed, such technology was practically unheard of just a quarter century or so ago when the Public Law 94-142, the Education for Handicapped
Children Act made its debut (Dalton, 2003). In 1997, however, the federal Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) would mandate the incorporation of assistive technology into each students educational program
(Dalton, 2003). Amendments to IDEA specified that: a) "students with disabilities participate in state
and district-wide assessment programs, with accommodations where necessary (alternate assessments are used only as a final alternative)
b) children and youth with disabilities have increased participation in the general curriculum;
c) parental participation shall be enhanced; d) transition planning and services shall occur;
