Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page paper presenting a plan to create a “permanent health fair” at a public hospital. Health fairs provide a variety of low-cost screening for heart disease, cancer and diabetes, while also providing a wealth of information for individuals using their services. More than 20 million Americans currently have no form of health insurance and do not qualify for public assistance. A hospital-based health fair setting has the ability to provide ongoing prevention and health promotion services while referring those needing attention to community groups that can share in the costs of treating the uninsured. film "Jerry Maguire," Tom Cruises character is berated by a sports figure negotiating a contract into screaming, "Show me the money! Show me the money!" into the telephone.
In many hospitals, that scene is played out at the admission desk. Clerks generally do not resort to screaming at would-be patients, and they substitute the word insurance for
money. The result is the same, however. Neither fictional characters nor very real people are able to gain what they seek.
It was only a short time ago that the estimated number of uninsured adults in America was 17 million. As of May 2004, a conservative estimate places that number
at no fewer than 20 million. This is less than 7 percent of the US population of 293 million, but for those 20 million so affected, it can be
a real problem. Public hospitals can help, and in so doing, increase their own revenues. The Permanent Health Fair Every city of
any size has a variety of health fairs occurring within it each year. These health fairs often are held in areas where elderly people are concentrated, and typically they
are intended to be marketing efforts for a variety of health services providers in the area. For a nominal fee, visitors can have a variety of testing done, including
blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screening. For an additional small fee, women can have that mammogram they seem to keep putting off until a later time.
Public health education efforts are paying off as more people than ever before are aware of the fact that they need to live healthier lifestyles.
