learner is fictitious. The ESL Learner "Mika" is an 11 year old female student originally from Russia. Mika
was adopted 2 years ago at age 9 by an American family who subsequently brought her to the United States. During the 10 month adoption process, Mika received orientation
education through the orphanage where she lived, and was instructed in basic English language skills with American transition educators. Prior to that, Mikas formal English language education was limited,
but she did excel in reading and writing in her native language and was an active student at the orphanage school. Over the
course of the past two years, Mika has received a variety of different Special Education services and ESL education, including introduction to Western languages, bilingual educational training with other Russian
students, and an adapted ESL program, designed to enhance language learning through reading, writing and the application of learned language skills. These elements were a part of Mikas individual
education plan (IEP) developed with a team of educators upon her arrival in the United States. Because of her initial assessments and her delays because of limited language proficiency, Mika
was placed in third grade in her local public school, where there were four other children between 2-4th grades who had relocated from Russia because of adoption. Mika has
progressed through public education programming and Special Education services at a required level, and is currently in 5th grade at age 11. Little is known about Mikas family
in Russia, except that she had little contact with other family members after the age of 5 and it is presumed that both of her birth parents died when she
