in the country. When assessing Columbia on behalf of a pharmaceutical company such as Glaxo-Welcom there are a number of considerations. Columbia has been a success story, with strong
economic growth being seen in the first decade of the twenty first century (Farzad, 2007, Anon, 2007). The rapid economic growth has been continuing, GDP1 was estimated at $467 billion
in 2011 compared to $445.3 billion in 2010 and $427 billion in 2009 (CIA, 2012). The real rate of growth is estimated to be 4.9% (CIA, 2012) with an economy
that is based on goods for which there is long term demand and a long term ability to supply; coffee, petroleum, flowers and textiles (Farzad, 2007). This indicates a strong
growth, especially when the growth rates of the more developed markets are much lower over the same period. However, it is also notable that there are some concerns and lack
of trust - there are some financial investors who appear unwilling to invest their own money (Farzad, 2007). The economy appears to be benefiting from increased stability, in the last
decade with the government appears to have reduced inflation and placed this under control and encouraged business, with a spreading entrepreneurial attitude (Farzad, 2007). Continued growth has been accompanied by
an increasing standard of living for its citizens. This all indicates a potentially good market with many of the indicators associated with emerging markets. However, there are also some
