firms and their annual reports, looking at the reported performance and the way that ratios and trend analysis may be used to assess performance, as well as looking at the
contexts of the notes to the annual accounts. The companies chosen are Brambles Ltd and Toll Holdings, looking at the accounts for both companies over a period of four years,
starting with the accounts ending June 2008 through to the most recent accounts for year ending June 2011. The accounts for Brambles are presented in US dollars and the Toll
accounts are presented in Australian dollars. However, using ratio analysis they can be seen as generally comparable. In this paper all figures cited will be in million except for the
per share data, unless otherwise stated. When looking at performance one of the most basic measures is the profit margin. There are several profit margins which may be used,
the main measured are the operating profit and the net profit margin. The operating profit margin is expressed as a percentage. This is the revenue after all direct and
indirect costs have been deducted. A well as the direct materials, there are also the indirect costs such as wages and administration, these are also known as the overheads.
