what are its relevance and implications for counseling? In clinical medicine, "assessment refers to the "evaluation of the patient for the purposes of forming a diagnosis and plan
of treatment" (Assessment, 2008). However, counseling literature also indicates that evaluation and assessment within the context of the initial session between the counselor and client are also used to establish
a therapeutic relationship of trust that will provide the emotional foundation for accomplishing the goals of a treatment plan. Assessment is used as the staring point for several different
psychotherapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral, motivational and personality-based approaches (Allen, et al, 2003). Historically, assessment instruments that are administered prior to treatment are considered primarily as diagnostic tools and these
are utilized in order to father "accurate information about the client, conceptualize and diagnose the clients problems, and develop a treatment plan" (Allen, et al, 2003, p. 165). However, some
scholars have broadened their view of assessment and feel that these tools can be used to gain therapeutic, as well as diagnostic, effect (Allen, et al, 2003). Research by
Thomas Sexton (1997 shows that the effectiveness of counseling is significantly influenced by the first session with the client. Discuss. Sexton, et al (1997) concluded from examining empirical research
