In assessing culturally diverse populations, the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics advises counselors to be cautious in selecting assessment instruments and practices as accurate assessment requires instruments that incorporate the psychometric properties specific to the client population (ACA, 2005). Ideally, assessment instruments should be normed specifically in regards to the clients population, that is, any formal assessment instrument recommended to the teacher should be have established norms in regards to the emotional and academic development of Spanish-speaking Kindergarten-age children (ACA, 2005). The ACA code also indicates that counselors should possess cultural sensitivity, which includes not only recognizing the importance of culture in a students life, but also the fact that social prejudices may lead to misdiagnosis or pathologizing certain individuals or groups (ACA, 2005). Maria is in a new country and among strangers who do not speak her language. These factors undoubtedly influence her insecurity and lack of peer interaction. Standards for multicultural assessment, which are published by the Association for Assessment in Counseling (AAC), a division of the ACA, indicate that any assessment instruments selected to measure an individuals language proficiency should be "suitable for the characteristics and background of the test taker" (AAC, 2003, p. 3).
