However, it is only with learning, which can be created if there is the development of a creative stretch within an organisation, that there will be a real development in terms of learning. 2. Senges Ideas in Action We can typify how learing takes place when we look at an example that is given by Senge. A good example of this is Royal Dutch Shell that unless it had developed and changed by creating a learning environment could have been subject to a later acquisition attempt. The initial development alone created a learning environment, but may not have created a learning organisation, but later events may be arguably creating this rare creature. Here there was the development of creative starch by increasing the visions of the company away form the reality to create the stretch (Senge, 1990). Senge uses this to show how learning had to challenge rather that compliment the existing status quo where measuring of performance had led to a position where the company was very weak. The first major change in Shells management was in 1971 when the analysts predicted major changes in the steady growth but the organisation failed to change so that it would be able to adapt, this was not a learning organisation, but one in danger of failing if they did not adapt and learn.
