in determining some of the substantial issues impacting young people, the use of assessment to influence planning processes is an important component. The following case study demonstrates the
correlation between assessment and planning and shows the use of an assessment tool to determine change for one young person, an individual named "Stuart." The assessment and planning processes
with a focus on change inform the development of a therapeutic plan for change, including the application of cognitive/behavioral therapy. Assessment and Planning The assessment information collected
for "Stuart" identifies a number of problem areas that are negatively impacting his psychosocial development and his educational performance. The assessment, for example, suggests that there are significant familial
issues, including the lack of appropriate parental modeling or involvement in Stuarts educational development, but pursuing parental involvement as a change strategy for Stuart is contra-indicated because of the noted
aggression and resistance expressed by Stuarts father, Kevin. Further, the assessments made in Stuarts home determined a general unwillingness to cooperate on the part of both parents, including an
unwillingness to support assessments for services that might improve Stuarts school performance. Stuarts home environment is a major contributing factor to his personal conflict and struggles in the
educational setting. Stuart sees more personal successes in his interactions with his peers, especially those young men who participate in truant behaviors and vandalism, then in attempting educational gains.
