(LD). Effective assessment aids the teacher in determining the appropriateness of instruction, in addition to offering an evaluation of progress (Stanford and Reeves, 2005). Identified LD students are provided with an individualized education program (IEP), which is usually supervised by a cooperative team. Examination of relevant literature reveals that need for multi-directional assessment in regards to LD students as matching "IEP goals to performance tasks" and then designing appropriate assessments, which "offer guidance for teachers, parents and learners" serves to promote achievement of IEP goals and better individualized learning (Stanford and Reeves, 2005, p. 18). Assessment can be defined as "the process of observing student learning by collaborating with students to collect and interpret data about their academic strengths and weaknesses" (Moon, 2005, p. 226). For LD students, experts recommend the use of a variety of assessment practices, as this provides teachers with a multidimensional perspective on the students overall cognitive development. For example, curriculum-based assessment practices connect student performance to the curriculum (Layton and Lock, 2007). This form of assessment evaluates student performance relative to the standards that are mandated for general education "by systematically increasing the difficulty" in the students assignment, while simultaneously monitoring progress (Layton and Lock, 2007). It is also recommended that teachers collect daily work samples to monitor progress and have students create a portfolio in order to provide a direct connection between instruction and the general education classroom curriculum (Layton and Lock, 2007). The legislation mandating the use of IEPs and IEP teams is the Individual With Disabilities Act (IDEA), which also requires that teachers should evaluate students with LD within the context of the general education curriculum and that these students show progress (Stanford and Reeves, 2005).
