the topic which they will focus upon: statistics related to stun gun use by law enforcement agencies. Crime runs rampant in the streets as more and more of the population
is finding their options severely limited. From common burglaries such as purse snatchings to more violent offenses it is up to the police to protect the population. To do this,
police departments use a series of tools and instruments to subdue criminals and to protect the welfare of the populace. One such instrument is the stun gun. This non-lethal alternative
has become the preferred method of subduing criminals and unruly or disorderly members of the populace. Supporters claim that tasers provide an effective and safe alternative to the use of
firearms. Opponents on the other hand believe that these tasers cause more harm than good. Stun guns have been linked to serious
injuries and even death when used improperly. In fact "a recent report notes a temporal association of taser use with 61 deaths in 2005 alone" (Link & Estes, 2008). Many
believe that the reason for these deaths and any injuries sustained due to the use of stun guns is directly the result of improper use of the weapon. The improper
use of tasers can be directly tied to injuries. It is being found that stun guns are "not always being used exclusively under conditions where a firearm would [normally] be
employed" (Nanthakumar et al., 2008). While the original purpose of the taser was to provide a safer alternative to firearms, "three independent investigators have shown cardiac stimulation by stun guns"
