research has been undertaken in an ethically responsible manner. While the pursuit of knowledge and desire to improve quality of life for patients is laudable, this should never be undertaken
with disregard for the patients own autonomy and rights. Therefore, ethics is always a very important consideration. Prior to the commencement of most research in the medical field there will
be a requirement for clearance to be gained from an ethics committee. However, peer reviews and external assessments, including criticisms of articles, can also serve as an important pressure to
help maintain ethical standards. In this paper a research article be examined in order to examine it from an ethical perspective. Research by Allen (et al, 2011) was undertaken with
the aim of assessing whether or not the use of nicotine patches on schizophrenic patients suffering from nicotine addiction would help to reduce their overall level of agitation. It is
well established through medical knowledge and many research articles that acute nicotine withdrawal deprivation in any individual who is addicted to nicotine is likely to increase the level of aggressive
behavior in that patient. The research focusing on schizophrenic patients may be seen as particularly pertinent, as the level of aggressive behavior has been demonstrated to increase as the patients
own baseline in terms of their general irritability and hostility increases, and patients with schizophrenia will often have higher than average baselines of these characteristics. Furthermore, it has also been
found that the prevalence of smoking within the schizophrenic community is higher than the population as a whole, with 78% prevalence, compared to 58% in the general population. In addition
to this increased prevalence schizophrenic patients are also more likely to smoke heavily. The combination of increased smoking levels and nicotine addiction, and the problems associated with reducing nicotine intake
