The paper looks at the degree to which there appears to be inequality in the way that women are able to be promoted and achieve
senior management and leadership positions. With less than a quarter of all executives being women globally and only 18% in the US this appears to be an under representation, and
once they reach a senior position they appear to suffer further discrimination with lower pay. The potential causes and influences are considered, such as national and corporate culture, practices
and stereotypes are all considered and then the way in which female management may benefit an organization is considered along with strategies that may be used to reduce the
barriers, advising diversity management as an optimal solution. 1. Introduction It is notable that there are few women heading, or in senior positions, in major companies. Looking at
the US fortune 500 companies, only 2% had female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) (Spitz, 2010). Theoretically, with women making up roughly half of the population and increasing numbers of women
taking part in the workplace this appears to be a significant under representation. There have been some measures adopted in order to increase the potential for women to gain equality
with men, a raft of equality legislation has been introduced in many countries across the world, but despite this there remain differences in levels of women at senior levels. The
issue is one which deserves consideration, not only to look at whether or not there is still a glass ceiling, but how that glass ceiling is manifesting in order to
