social worker the purpose of the interview has to be determined in order to asses how communication should take place. Interviews are often seen as an ordeal or a test,
but to gain the right people for the position as well as seeing how they sand up to stress there should also be the desire of the interviewer to be
able to gain a full and commonplace picture of the candidates strengths and weaknesses which can only be gained from effective communication and may be blocked if the interviewer technique
is too formal or aggressive, and may be biased in the outcome if the technique used is too relaxed or laid back. To consider this we need to look
at communications theory. Communication is defined by the dictionary as "The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behaviour" (Dictionary.com, 2005). From this we can
see communication can take place in a range of conscious and unconscious models, either directly or indirectly. This may also take place in a unilateral manner, one to one,
or one to many, or a bilateral manner where there is communication between parties rather than one way communication. We also have to remember the way that communication may also
be formal or informal, and vertical or horizontal. Many of the theories may concern all types of information flow. Here we have a formal situation, that is sought to be
informalised to allow the participants to relax, there may some elements of unilateral communications, where there is the telling of the candidate about the job, but this is mostly one
to one bilateral communication with the interviewer seeking to explore the abilities, attitudes and motivators of the candidate (Bauer, 1963). However, for communication to be effective it needs to
