men to be mugged, just to use two examples. This paper will explore a sample statistical analysis in order to demonstrate how revealing demographic data can be. The question
posed in this statistical analysis is "Do you favor or oppose the death penalty for persons convicted of murder"? This question is asked in conjunction with five demographic questions intended
to reveal any meaningful correlations between a particular demographic trait and favoring or opposing the death penalty. The five demographic traits measured in this study are the respondents race, sex,
self-reported social class, the degree to which the respondent attends religious services, and his or her marital status. A total of 671 individuals responded to the instrument. Of those,
543 were white (80.9% of the total), 76 reported themselves as black (11.3%) and 52 as "other". Of those numbers, 73.3% of white respondents favored the death penalty, while only
34.2% of black respondents favored it. 73.1% of "other" respondents favored the death penalty. Within the subset of those respondents who favor capital punishment, 86.1% are white, and just 5.6%
are black. In regards to sex, 53.2% of respondents were female, and 46.8% were male. Of these, 75.5% of males favored the death penalty while 63.0% of women were
in favor. Within the demographic of those who favor capital punishment, 51.3% were male and 48.7% were female. Class is something of a subjective measurement, and thusly the survey
