effective teaching method, particularly in affective aspects. The teacher is not giving so much information that s/he takes on a lecturer role, but rather acts as a facilitator, guiding
the conversation of the group discussion. Learners should be knowledgeable enough about the subject matter so that they are able to positively contribute to the discussion while yet learning
new information. Advantages The group discussion is centered on the learners and on the subject at hand. In exploring ways of better
dealing with patient education, each learner may have a positive contribution to make that can help all to arrive at the course objective. The group discussion helps to bring
out these observations, and perhaps bring some additional education approaches to the group that all can use in their efforts to educate diabetic patients. Disadvantages
There is a danger that the discussion can veer off course, and it is the teachers role to ensure that the discussion stays on track. The group
must have at least some knowledge of the topic of discussion beforehand, or the discussion can disintegrate into an exercise in "pooled ignorance" (Bastable, 1997; p. 265). Evaluation
Evaluation is by direct observation. Additionally, a pre/post test could be used to assess the effectiveness of this teaching method. Handouts of lecture
