to home television screens. From the 1950s, when television viewing first became common in the United States, until the mid-1970s. the technology available to the television audience was relatively
simple and consisted essentially of a TV set. The last decades, however, have seen an explosion of new devices for home entertainment, all of them outgrowths of basic television
technology. As I have learned, the entire field, including television itself, is now referred to as video, a word that includes in its meaning almost all the systems devoted
to electronically creating images. In its "infancy," television was generally thought of as a medium for the presentation of existing arts rather
than as a new art form in and of itself. WNBT, the first regularly operating TV station, went on the air in 1940, offering programming to the approximately 10,000
television sets believed to exist in the New York metropolitan area (most of these sets belonged to employees of WNBTs parent company, RCA). The stations schedule was dominated by familiar
genres adapted from other media. Newsreels, travelogues, and animated cartoons, all staples of American cinema, were telecast daily, as were stage attractions such as variety revues and puppet shows.
According to what I know, perhaps the most original video programming concepts were in the area of self-improvement: rumba lessons and cooking shows. In the decade following World War
II, national television service began in earnest as the three giant broadcasting corporations, NBC, CBS and ABC, attempted to create national TV networks on the model of their commercial radio
