various aspects of the book. Plot Summary The book covers a period of only two days, and opens in an army camp. The protagonist, a young man whose name
is eventually revealed to be Henry Fleming, reflects on the fact that it looks as if the army is finally going to fight. Since he joined, they have marched and
camped, but never actually engaged the enemy, and hes bored and anxious to test himself in battle. Like most young people, he has two basic beliefs: war is a glorious
adventure, and he will never die. He finds out that hes wrong on both counts. We understand that this young mans experience will be unusual when we read of
his mothers reaction to his enlistment. Of course she was against it, but when he told her, simply, that he had enlisted, she replied "The Lords will be done, Henry"
and went on with her milking. When he actually packed and got ready to leave, she gave him clean socks and shirts, told him to take care of himself and
not to make any friends with the "bad" men he was sure to meet in the army. She is every inch the frontier woman, strong and expecting nothing to be
easy. She tells him "Watch out, and be a good boy," and he leaves. But he turns back at the gate to see her kneeling "among the potato peelings," shaking
as tears run down her face. Obviously she hadnt wanted him to see how upset she was; she didnt want him to take that memory with him. As it is,
her reaction and subsequent lecture embarrass him, and hes glad to leave. Now he sits in camp, listening to the older vets talk about whats coming and getting ready for
