a way of life. This paper considers several aspects of the practice, including the current situation in the U.S., the difference between outsourcing inside the continental U.S. and overseas; the
effect on small business; and the effect on the textile industry in North Carolina. Discussion The jobs that are usually outsourced are those that "have become routine and commodified, and
where U.S. worker productivity no longer beats foreign workers" (Offshore outsourcing, 2004). There are many benefits to offshoring/outsourcing that get lost in the shouting about job loss; they include the
fact that U.S. companies save 58 cents on every dollar "of spending on business services that moves offshore" (Offshore outsourcing, 2004). Second, the companies that provide offshore services need equipment
themselves, and they often buy it from the U.S. (Offshore outsourcing, 2004). Third, many offshore service providers "are in fact U.S. companies that repatriate earnings" and finally, the money that
is saved on salaries can be put back into the company to create new jobs (Offshore outsourcing, 2004). Outsourcing is a fact of life; its here to stay, and it
seems that it might not be as bad as people fear. The difference between outsourcing within the U.S. and outsourcing to companies entirely outside national boundaries means what it says,
though we usually think of outsourcing as being only international. However, "[M]ost outsourced jobs never leave American soil" but instead go to other states (Offshore outsourcing, 2004). The Labor Department
reports that "9 percent of non-seasonal U.S. layoffs in the first quarter were due to outsourcing, but less than a third of those jobs went overseas" (Offshore outsourcing, 2004). In
