of Catholic tradition. The first dispute to be examined occurred in the fourth century and encompassed the very foundation of Christian theology -- the nature of the Trinity. There
is no doubt that early Christians had to confront some knotty theological problems. From Judaism, they embraced the concept of God as the creator of the universe, the "governor and
deliverer who alone is worthy of worship and praise" (Ottati 1044). However, early Christians also believed that in Jesus, there was "new creation" and that, as it says in Corinthians
5:17 "everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new." The question that they had to answer was how to make sense of these convictions in within the context
of monotheism (Ottati 1044). Christianity spread because of the vibrancy of their belief in Jesus as "the second Adam who succeeds where the first failed (Rom. 5:12-19); the teacher who
delivers perfect wisdom; the pioneer and perfecter of our faith" (Ottati 1044). In the Gospel of John, Jesus is the "only" begotten son, the "Logos," the Word of God...the Word
incarnate, the true life that was the light of the people" (Ottati 1044). Additionally, early Christians also saw their experience of Jesus and redemption to have another dimension. They felt
that the entire Christian movement was galvanized and energized by an unseen agency, the Holy Spirit (Ottati 1044). Believers in Jesus were baptized into the body of Christ by calling
on the power of the Spirit (I Cor. 12:13). Furthermore, First Corinthians 12:4-11 indicates that early Christians received the gifts of "wisdom, faith, healing, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and the
