the Impressionists because they appeal to almost everyone, at least as we start to learn about art. Its not that the paintings themselves are "easy," but the concept of
painting to give the viewer an "impression" of the scene is fairly clear. And that indeed was the aim of artists like Monet (who is the quintessential Impressionist), Renoir
and others. They wanted to move the viewer to an emotional reaction by suggesting the action; that is, giving an impression of it, rather than making a truly representational
copy of the scene. The three paintings are Claude Monets Impression: Sunrise painted in 1873; Auguste Renoirs La Moulin de la Galette and James McNeill Whistlers Nocturne in Black and
Gold The Falling Rocket. The three pictures are very different, and yet they are similar in technique. Impressionists, according to the text, are not interested in depicting
realistic scenes that illustrate social problems or teach lessons, they are interested in "depicting in their work the pleasures of life, including the pleasures of simply seeing. If Impressionism
is characterized by a way of seeing-by the attempt to capture the fleeting effects of light by applying paint in small, quick strokes of color, it is also defined by
an intense interest in images of leisure" (p. 492). These images include the sunrise; a group of people in a park; and a fireworks exhibition. Monets painting
