by K. Von Huben 6/2010 Please Introduction Oedipus is a fascinating character, at once prideful and arrogant and yet concerned for
his people; self-regarding but caring. This paper answers several questions about him and his actions in the play. Discussion The character of Oedipus: According to the Priest, Oedipus was able
to save the city of Thebes from the Sphinx because he was aided by God. He is therefore seen as favored by God and he is called the "Greatest in
all mens eyes" (Sophocles line 40). Its also revealed that the people think of him as a "savior" (line 48); that Oedipus calls himself an "ally" of his people (line
135); and says that he will be "a champion of my country and the God" (line 136). Thus he is seen, by himself and the Theban people, as a heroic
figure who will save them from the misery they are suffering. Is Oedipus morally guilty? Scholars have been debating this one for centuries. There is no doubt that he is
legally guilty, but morally its difficult to attach blame to him for what he did even though we find it abhorrent. There is a hint that Jocasta knows who is
he, for she begs him not to continue asking questions, but to let the matter rest. In fact, when she says "God keep you from the knowledge of who you
