at the same time the stories are always somehow deeply imbedded in the story, or within the story, of Addie Bundren who is dead. The following paper analyzes the character
and the significance of the character of Addie Bundren in Faulkners novel, especially in relationship to her position as a phantom protagonist. As I Lay Dying: Addie Bundren In
the beginning of the novel the story is revolving around Addie as she lies dying. The family is even busy making her coffin for her as she is dying, constructing
it beneath her window. While this may well seem a bit depressing for most people it seems as though Addie is a woman who is not afraid of death, and
perhaps eagerly awaits death as a time when she can finally be free. Her presence, throughout the novel, often makes references to death and how life is stifling. She notes,
for example, how her "father used to say that the reason for living was to get ready to stay dead a long time" (Faulkner 114). As such it is not
necessarily as depressing as one could envision in relationship to the process of dying and the construction of a coffin outside her window. Such a powerful beginning to the novel,
and powerful beginning to the description of Addie, makes her a phantom protagonist that cannot be ignored. The primary focus of the entire novel is the journey taken
to Jefferson City where Addie wanted to be buried. She did not want to be buried with her family for she really did not, deep within or even consciously within,
