Essay / Research Paper Abstract

20 pages in length. How human beings relate to one another with regard to perception, awareness and time depends greatly upon any number of variables; when art is brought into the mix, however, those variables become less defined and significantly more fluid. It may be true that at the very core of each person exists a common thread of kinship in relation to the bigger picture, but there are grand variances that separate one approach to art from another; while artists may share many similar traits, there will always be a combination of subtle and extreme differences that set one creator apart from the next. This approach to artistic rendering is a complicated and curious equation. The answer to why a particular reality is perceived as pertinent in one application yet not in another may be locked away in century's worth of artistic evolution. Contemporary sociologists have come to understand that the human mental condition is part of a complex transmission between environmental and biological factors, a fact that is tempered to a significant degree by the equalizing element of art when dreams, reality and surrealism are part of the broader spectrum. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

While it is true that Dogen may be viewed as a Zen Master, one might readily argue that an even deeper and unique philosophy is involved from an artistic standpoint, as well. Clearly, Zen appeal originates from the experience of the here and now, while the Western approach may be distorted by the actual act of remembering itself. "The implication of Dogens standpoint is that many statements that have been misunderstood as having metaphysical significance are actually descriptive statements about experience" (Kasulis 353-373).
