Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page discussion of the value of artificial intelligence to future generations. The author points out that sci-fi films like “Neuromancer”, “Matrix”, and “Blade Runner” prey on the fears of those who have a poor understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the computer technology around which artificial intelligence revolves. Instead of being a threat to mankind as films such as those noted above delight in portraying it, artificial intelligence holds the most promise of practically any of mankind’s technologies in terms of the benefits which it has the potential to yield. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Sci-fi films like "Neuromancer", "Matrix", and "Blade Runner" present the concept of artificial intelligence as one which could hold considerable threat for future generations. These films prey
on the fears of those who have a poor understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the computer technology around which artificial intelligence revolves. Instead of being a threat to
mankind as films such as those noted above delight in portraying it, artificial intelligence holds the most promise of practically any of mankinds technologies in terms of the benefits which
it has the potential to yield. The term "artificial intelligence" was first applied in 1956 at a meeting in Dartmouth, he
first such meeting to formally define the field (Tenner, 1994). The field of artificial intelligence is concerned with making machines which have the ability to behave intelligently. Tenner
(1994) eloquently sums up the wide range of interests which are involved in the field:
"...artificial intelligence had begun as an intellectual adventure of mathematicians, philosophers, social scientists and engineers. Its forerunners had suitably arcane names, but "artificial intelligence" was the choice..."
Artificial intelligence involves the association of machines with computer programs, the level of which varies from the most
elementary to quite advanced. Programs which behave at a level which either equals or exceeds human intelligence is the ultimate goal of the science.
As is evidenced in the films noted above, the concept of artificial intelligence becomes particularly interesting when combined with that of robotics. The science and
