Essay / Research Paper Abstract

10 pages in length. How mankind uses his infinite wisdom, ability to learn and progress his species has long been a determinant of how advanced human beings have become throughout the ages. Fire established man as an inventor but perhaps more importantly, it solidified his existence upon this earth; each invention or discovery since that time has helped to perpetuate that survival, as well. Now, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, the question is not do we continue upon this ever-broadening road of tremendous technological discovery, but how far do we take our ability beyond reason? This question could not be anymore pertinent than when contemplating the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) as it compares to the human mind's capability for reasoning and learning. PROS AND CONS The first thing that typically jumps into someones mind when the concept of AI is broached is how science fiction portrays this futuristic idea. Indeed, the extent to which films and books have expounded upon the potential for mankind being overtaken by its own creation is both grand and far-reaching; that machines have already been created to conjure up such emotions as fear speaks to stepping over the fine line of what is warranted in a civilized society and what is wholly unjustifiable. At the crux of this argument lies the most important two prong question of all: will machines one day outsmart their makers, and what consequences will this reap for the human race? When one considers the notion of a completely machine-dependent society - a place where even the most minute decision or task is accomplished by artificial intelligence -- one cannot overlook how the human mind would slowly but steadily lose the abilities it has developed throughout its evolutionary process. Like any other muscle left to decay, the human mind could not withstand the absence of stimulation it needs in order to stay in shape; as such, capacities for reasoning ...
