A 3 page research paper that discusses the Articles of Confederation, which constitutes the first attempt by the Founding Fathers of the United States to form the legal foundation for the central government. Ratified in 1781, it was intended to unify the states and define the powers of the Continental Congress. The Articles of Confederation were eventually abandoned because this document was determined to be ineffectual in giving the central government sufficient authority to carry out its mission. However, examination of the Articles shows that they did serve a limited purpose and definitely provided the young country with a learning experience that led to the creation of the current Constitution. the young country with a learning experience that led to the creation of the current Constitution. In considering the Articles, it should be understood that they represented a far
different conceptualization of the U.S. government than the one that eventually evolved. The states feared the power of a central authority. Therefore, Americans at that time tended to see the
country in terms of a "league of confederated states," with Congress representing "thirteen independent polities" (Middlekauff). Drafted by a committee led by John Dickinson, the Articles were first introduced
at the Second Continental Congress on July 12, 1776 (Articles Answers.com). Three points immediately instigated dissension and these points was the right of the central government to dispose of public
lands located in the West (Articles Answers.com). However, after revision, the Articles were adopted by Congress on November 15, 1777 (Articles Answers.com). In its final form, the Articles specified
that "no state should be deprived of territory for the benefit of the United States" (Articles Answers.com). The significance of this stipulation is show by the fact that Maryland
refused to ratify the Articles until all states claiming territory northwest of the Ohio River relinquished these claims (Articles Answers.com). Maryland was certainly not alone among the states in its
western concerns. The charters of Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Connecticut and Massachusetts asserted that their territory extended to the "South Sea" or the Mississippi River (Middlekauff). In regards to Western
