to. In general, the NYT will provide analytical and in-depth coverage of an issue, whereas CNN is more concerned with bringing the news to the public as it happens and
updating items frequently on the 24-hour newsfeed system. This is evident both on the television news coverage from CNN and on CNN.com, which endeavours to keep the public informed as
to latest developments rather than looking closely into the background of news items, and offering deeper political analysis as the NYT does.
One of the major issues which is being considered in the American media at the present time is the effect which the
war in Iraq and domestic economic and social policies will have on the upcoming elections in 2004. Current articles from CNN and the NYT offer a rather different viewpoint on
these issues. CNN, for example, leads with a story about the location of the 2004 Republican national convention, stating that this is intended to showcase Bushs leadership and provided a
forceful and effective backdrop for the presidential campaign. The emphasis is not on the policies which Bush will present in the course of the presidential campaign or on the impact
which the war has had on his chances of re-election, but rather on the publicity and propaganda elements of the forthcoming campaign.
