Authors begin the article by talking about the concept of inclusion and how many children with disabilities are included in ordinary educational settings. This gives them a chance to
interact with peers who do not have disabilities. Generally speaking, the mere idea of inclusion does not really do anything in terms of acceptance. Authors suggest that in fact, there
is not a good reaction to people with disabilities. This is particularly true for those who have speech problems. Communication is important in society and if children are unable to
easily communicate with peers, boundaries are set up. Some children are ignored and often become loners, at least in a particular classroom setting. The article goes on to look toward
AAC or augmentative and alternative communication systems. They explain that this model can increase participation for the children in their daily lives as well as in the classroom setting. Studies
done by authors do promote the idea that education for non-disabled children is appropriate. In the study reported, students who were involved in role playing activity displayed more positive behavior
patterns as it respects their peers with speech disabilities. Yet, other students who did not have the benefit of role-playing, but were still apprised of the benefits of AAC, were
not as receptive. Clearly, role-playing is very helpful in educating youth about disabilities. This is an important article. It suggests a great many things about society and acceptance. It seems
that integration is not all that is necessary. Inclusive classrooms work up to a point. Intervention does seem to be necessary in order to support a positive classroom atmosphere. Certainly
