Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 3 page summary of a research article on software development. Research has suggested that user participation in the analysis stage of software development will be more significant to the overall success of software development than user participation in the design stage. Most of this research has focused only on project team members and not on operational users whose work will be impacted by the system being developed. Wu and Marakas designed a study that explored the “impact of operational end user participation in two important stages of the system development life cycle,” specifically, the analysis and design phrases of software development (Wu and Marakas, 2006, p. 127). user participation in the design stage. Most of this research has focused only on project team members and not on operational users whose work will be impacted by the system being developed. Wu and Marakas designed a study that explored the "impact of operational end user participation in two important stages of the system development life cycle," specifically, the analysis and design phrases of software development (Wu and Marakas, 2006, p. 127). The study design included four specific hypotheses that addressed user participation, degree of involvement in either the analysis or design phase and how the perceived sense of participation affects the way in which the resulting system is regarded and used. As this suggests, this was a multilayered, complex study design that explored all permutations of the variables that were investigated. However, the study design is easily understood when it is realized that the investigators focused on either "high participation" or "low participation" and the perceived effect that these variables had on the participants in regards to analysis and design activity (Wu and Marakas, 2006, p. 130). Using 210 student participants from 3 U.S. universities, this laboratory experiment used the General Linear Model and the Structural Equation Modeling technique in analyzing the study data. This revealed that when the user-participants were not allocated any developmental responsibility, the participants nevertheless felt a significant increase in their "intention to use, process satisfaction and perceived ownership" of the software system (Wu and Marakas, 2006, p. 127). However, higher participation was also shown to cause a greater sense of these effects than did lower participation. User participation in the analysis process was observed to lead to a higher, but not significantly higher, level of perceived participation than did participation in the design process. Also, a sense of meaningful participation in either ...
