to adult relationships. One important aspect of the study was the premise that one of the developmental tasks of adulthood is individuation and intimacy in relationships. To achieve this balance of autonomy and intimacy, individuals must develop autonomy within the family. Individuation allows a person to act with autonomy and self-direction. Both are needed for a healthy relationship as an adult. Research has suggested that individuation is related to the parents own level of intimacy and individuation. It has also been related to family cohesion, gender role, and influence of siblings. Recent research has focused on attachment theory and family systems theory. Attachment theory, which is about how attached the child becomes to early caregivers relates to the ability to become attached in adult relationships. Family systems theory considers the entire family and the relationships within that structure. Sibling research considers gender, birth order, number of sisters, number of brothers, number of total siblings, and spacing between siblings. This study considered all these variables. The investigators also used intergenerational family theory which explores the process of individuation for adults through certain constructs, such as the intrinsic tension that emerges form individuation and intimacy with ones own parents.. other constructs included were intimidation, personal authority, triangulation, and fusion. The study concluded that younger men who had all male siblings had more intimacy to parents and more intimidation by parents. Older women who had more brothers and more siblings experienced less intimidation by parents and less intimacy with parents as well as with spouses. This was an interesting study because it considered different aspects of sibling research than most research on siblings.
