Bell, Ompad and Sherman (2006) investigated one of these groups. Purpose of the study : Public health practitioners need more data on the behavior of women who have sex
with women (WSW) in order to evaluate their drug and sex-related risks. The term "women who have sex with women" is used to differentiate between a behavioral act and a
source of identity, i.e., defining oneself as a lesbian. Independent and dependent variables : The independent variables for the study were drug use; socio-demographic characteristics (homelessness, incarceration history, and
educational attainment); and past and current sexual behavior. The dependent variable consisted of the participants WSW status, which was characterized according to past and current behavior. Participants :
The study participants consisted of a cohort of young women, aged 15 to 30 years, who had begun a drug habit (heroin, crack, or cocaine) within the previous 5 years.
Setting : The study took place in Baltimore where outreach workers recruited participants within targeted neighborhoods. The research team utilized a study van, which served as a mobile
center for the research. Summary of Procedures : Participants were evaluated at baseline, six and twelve-month follow-ups, at which time, the researchers administered the study instruments, and also performed
a venipuncture for HIV and hepatitis C virus, accompanied by pretest counseling. The participants returned two weeks later to receive their test results and post-test counseling. Participants were monetarily for
completing the baseline assessment and for the post-test visit. The baseline instrument consisted of three sections, which ascertained the participants socio-demographic features, drug use patterns and sexual behavior, including history
